With apologies to my British colleagues. Here in America, "#" is often called a pound sign. I realize that this conflicts with what a Briton would regard as a pound sign (£), but unfortunately, I can't think of another term to use that the majority of my audience will understand. (I've considered and rejected using the term "hash-mark" already, since I think most of my target audience will not have encountered that term before. Although, as Mark "The Red" Harlan says, I'm sure a large sum of money could change my mind.)
